Preparing Your Home for a Newborn

August 10, 2026

When you're expecting, every baby blog in existence will hand you a 47-item nursery checklist. We'd rather help you focus on the few things that genuinely make life easier once your baby arrives.

Start with the sleep zones

Whether baby sleeps in a bassinet, crib, or co-sleeper, that zone should be clean, dust-free, and within reach of a nightstand you can navigate at 3 a.m. with one hand. Wipe down any new furniture before assembly — foam and pressed wood off-gas and can accumulate dust from the warehouse.

Prep the changing station

Stock it with two weeks' worth of diapers, wipes, and a spare onesie or two. You will not want to be hunting for supplies while holding a newborn. Keep a small bin nearby for soiled items so nothing has to travel far.

Deep clean before, not after

The last few weeks of pregnancy are the right time for a thorough home clean — baseboards, bathroom grout, kitchen appliances. Once baby arrives, your energy is gone and guests will be coming through. A clean baseline means you're just maintaining, not catching up.

Set up a feeding corner

Pick a comfortable chair with good back support. Put a side table nearby with a water bottle, phone charger, burp cloth, and something mindless to watch. You will spend many hours here.

Non-toxic matters now more than ever

Newborns spend most of their time on floors, in arms, and pressing their faces into fabric. Switch to fragrance-free laundry detergent for anything that touches baby, and opt for plant-based surface cleaners in the rooms baby uses most. It doesn't have to cost more — vinegar and baking soda clean almost everything.
