The problem with conventional cleaners
Many common household cleaners contain synthetic fragrances (a catch-all for dozens of unlisted chemicals), quaternary ammonium compounds (linked to respiratory irritation), and surfactants that leave residue on surfaces babies touch. None of these are tested for infant exposure specifically.
What actually works
Surfaces: A 1:10 solution of white vinegar and water cuts grease and kills most common bacteria. Add a few drops of tea tree oil for extra antimicrobial action. For stubborn grime, a paste of baking soda and castile soap works without harsh fumes.
Floors: Steam cleaning is the gold standard — it sanitizes without any chemical residue. If you mop, use a fragrance-free plant-based concentrate diluted well.
Laundry: Switch to a fragrance-free detergent for anything that touches baby. "Free and clear" versions of most major brands work exactly as well as the scented ones.
Glass and mirrors: Plain rubbing alcohol diluted with water. Streak-free, no residue.
What you can skip
Antibacterial soaps and sprays beyond what's needed in the kitchen. Scented plug-in air fresheners — open a window instead. Dryer sheets on baby clothes. Any cleaner that requires ventilation but you're applying in a closed room.
A note on "natural" labels
"Natural" and "eco-friendly" are not regulated terms. Read the ingredient list, or look for cleaners that publish their full formulations. Third-party certifications like EWG Verified or MADE SAFE are more meaningful than marketing copy.
